Healthcare Centre of Excellence for Estates Management Best Practice

Wednesday the 9th June saw the launch of the Healthcare Centre of Excellence group (CoEgroup.) The event, which was held at Mass PLC’s headquarters (the sponsor of the CoE) was attended by PCT’s and healthcare professionals across the country.

With the chancellor announcing a 20% cut in government funding, it has become even more apparent that the NHS sector, needs to reduce its energy output. It was discussed at the group that it will be public private partnerships that will help the NHS achieve this target.

The Centre of Excellence, sponsored by Mass Software, provided a variety of Healthcare Estates professionals and private Healthcare suppliers with the opportunity to meet and discuss industry best practice techniques in an open forum to enhance their service offering and operational efficiencies.

Speakers throughout the day identified the challenges facing the Healthcare sector, and looked to develop concepts to overcome these.

Intuitive Business Intelligence with GIS (ESRI UK)
Achieving Energy Management Excellence (Cavendish Engineers)
Successful Energy Conservation (Trend Controls)

Chaired by Brian Court, an experienced operational Facilities Manager with a number of years based in different sectors, the group heard about the potential of co-location integration concepts which is being put forward by various NHS Trusts to overcome shortfalls in funding and energy shortages (or 'brown outs').

The latest energy management framework, ISO 16001 and new technologies, actions and suggestions for integrating space and energy data to cut costs, rationalise space and engender green initiatives were also covered.

Brian Court (Healthcare Centre of Excellence Chairman) said “The CoE aims to deliver Estates professionals within the sector with the tools, information and support to discover efficiencies, drive best practices and share concepts which will benefit all within the sector. The first event was a good success, welcoming partners from across the sector and we hope to expand this further going forward. The next event will be in November and we plan to discuss how providers can enhance the quality of care with the use of technology and how to best prepare business cases to finance projects.”

Ian Gelling (Director of Mass Software, sponsor of the Centre of Excellence) stated that “in order to overcome the significant difficulties that face the public sector and primarily, the Healthcare sector in the coming years, it is key that best practices be identified and adopted with a greater use of partnership working to enhance service delivery, reduce costs and manage risks. This Special Interest Group will create an excellent opportunity to achieve these aims and is open to all within the sector to contribute, share and grow."
