Businesses Back Training During Recession

According to recent studies by the Institute of Directors (IoD), businesses are utilising training to over-come challenges in the economy in order to up-skill their staff for greater performance and motivational benefits.

Mike Harris, IoD Head of Education and Skills Policy commented that during "previous recessions, training has always been one of the first areas to be cut." He continued, stating that company directors are "looking very hard at the value-add, rather than the mechanistic forms of training. Standard training may be squeezed but there are lots of examples of training associated with talent management programmes, leadership development, improved team working etc actually being on the increase."

Chris Humphries, Chief Executive for the UK Commission for Employment and Skills echoed this point whilst supporting the utilisation of training. He said "my message to all employers is: try to use this time to invest in the skills of your people, to build your capacity and business plan so that the minute post-recession opportunities or 'green shoots' appear, you are ready to make the most of them."

Government publishes Skills Investment Strategy

The investment strategy is designed to underpin the priorities announced in the recently published national skills strategy, 'Skills for Growth'.

With over £4.4 billion factored in for 2010-2011, existing initiatives such as Train to Gain, will see great support in the coming months.
