The Health and Safety Executive continues to be bombarded with complaints relating to Disabled Access to facilities and public centres. Those responsible for Health and Safety and disabled access will be scrutinised further to ensure that their establishments are doing everything reasonable to provide for disabled users.
This comes as no surprise after recent research conducted by Capability Scotland who assessed the progress made five years after the changes to the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) requiring physical access improvements to be made to a property.
The research identified that uneven pavements, a lack of drop kerbs and a failure to provide ramped access to buildings are persistent problems. It also discussed the inappropriate use of disabled parking bays by non-disabled users and the impacts this poses to access.
With members of the charity Muscular Dystrophy Campaign launching their own covert survey into disabled access this week, the media spotlight will be illuminating facilities that are failing to provide adequate access to their properties. The charity plans to report on cinemas, leisure centres and other public buildings to raise awareness to this ongoing problem.
The charity plans to publish the results of their survey on the 3rd December; the UN International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
