Sustainability & Risk

The Archibus Sustainability & Risk domain encompasses business applications that work proactively to forecast and minimise risks to the organisation: its staff, its productivity, or its competitive viability.

This is a comprehensive suite of applications that provide the ability to manage all aspects of building a clean and sustainable environment. In addition, integrates with other key applications within Archibus such as Projects, Condition Assessment, and Maintenance.

In this blog, I will be focusing on Sustainability Assessments.

Providing an environmentally friendly building that improves the balance between people and facilities is an important philosophy for many companies. Not only can an environmentally friendly building provide a healthy environment for employees and the surrounding community, but it can also improve efficiency and reduce costs. Regular sustainability assessment enables organisations to conduct business in ways that ensure the long-term future of the planet, its resources, and its people.

With the Sustainability Assessment application, you first document and diagnose the “green” state of your facility by asking the following types of questions for each equipment item and location:

  • Is this promoting good air quality?
  • Is this conserving energy?
  • Is this conserving natural resources?
  • Does this meet government environmental regulations?
  • Are waste products being disposed of properly? Are they hurting the environment?

I have split this into three key area’s all of which provide information enabling organisations to achieve more sustainable building and environment for now and the future

a)    Green Building

b)    Energy Management

c)    Waste Management

Green Building

Reducing a building's carbon footprint and certifying that your building meets environmental standards not only helps improve the environmental impact of your building but can also reduce costs and improve your company's public image. The Archibus Green Building application addresses two important needs for companies that are striving to improve the environmental impact of their building:

  • scoring the environmental impact of a building

Companies that decide to pursue LEED, BREEAM, or other environmental sustainability certification can upload background information for reference; track submissions, responses, comments, and revisions; and self-score their building against the certification requirements. During the scoring process, you can enter the capital cost and annual savings associated with each process step, enabling the system to calculate the payback period for each step.

Archibus Green Building is configurable for use with various certification standards for new or existing buildings, so it is useful for those considering new certification, those during a certification process, and those with certified buildings seeking requalification.

You can also score buildings for purposes that do not relate to certification, such as an Energy Conservation Measures (ECM) project. The forms, reports, and structure of this application lend themselves to a wide variety of potential applications.

  • determining a building's carbon footprint

With the application's carbon footprint tools, you can enter the data required to obtain a building's carbon footprint using various footprint protocols. Archibus Green Building follows the framework documented by the GHG (Greenhouse Gas) Protocol Corporate Standard published by the World Resources Institute/World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WRI/WBCSD). With the built-in unit conversion process, you can configure conversion values and enter data in any units desired.

With the carbon footprint tools, you can make decisions on how to reduce the GHG emissions and you can use the data for formal GHG inventory reporting.

Determining your carbon footprint and certification self-scoring are independent of each other. You can choose to implement one or both of the features. Depending on which features you implement, Green Building enables you to answer such questions as:

  • We need to reduce our carbon footprint. How can we compute it for each of our buildings? What are our totals for our whole organisation? Are we trending towards our long-term targets? Where can we invest most strategically?
  • What would be the payback period for pursuing green building certification? How close are our buildings to eligibility for the next level of LEED certification? How do we provide proof that we have managed our certified buildings in a way that warrants requalification?
  • Which sustainability targets should we set to ensure longevity, viability, and overall value for our portfolio?

As with all Archibus WEB Central applications, key consoles are provided to analyse and manage data in a clear and user-friendly format using consoles. The Emissions Console provides graphics and data enabling organisations to review past and plan future emissions reductions to create a clean and more sustainable environment.

Energy Management

With high energy costs, new sustainability mandates, and “cap and trade” legislation discussions, energy management is top-of-mind at all organisations. The Archibus Energy application is a cost management program that analyses your energy costs and helps you make decisions for today's energy-conscious business environment.

Unlike spreadsheets or your finance software alone, Archibus provides degree-day features for normalising fluctuations in weather, energy-specific audits for finding errors in complex energy bills, and what-if analyses to evaluate the potential costs of energy increases or savings due to conservation, renovation, co-generation, or demand-response agreements.

The application enables you to flexibly manage your utility bills. For example:

  • If you receive energy bills that are for more than one building, you can use the Enter Bills for Groups of Buildings task to enter bills for that group of buildings and have the application prorate the bill using the proration method you define for the group.

Waste Management

Regardless of the type of business you are in - hospital, manufacturing plant, scientific research site, corporate office, or university - your operations generate waste. Whether this waste is hazardous, medical, output from a manufacturing process, or even paper, as a good corporate citizen your company will want to store and dispose of it properly.

The Archibus Waste application helps you categorise your waste and manage all processes of the waste cycle (generation, accumulation, storage, and disposition). It answers such questions as:

  • For each specific waste profile, how much waste has been generated, and by whom?
  • Has any site exceeded its waste storage limits or thresholds?
  • How effective are our recycling programs?
  • Which vendors are taking custody and legal responsibility for our waste?
  • Which vendors are transporting our waste?
  • What hazardous wastes are coming due for transport?
  • Have I received a signed manifest indicating that the vendor has received and accepted legal responsibility for the waste?

With the Waste application, you can manage waste and categorise it according to your company's reporting needs. For example, you can sort your waste by type (hazardous, municipal, residual), destination (disposal, recycling, discharge), internal category, business operation, and more. Additionally, the application produces container labels and waste manifest forms required for transporting hazardous waste.

Building a more sustainable environment is not easy as growth organisations will create more waste. The key is to manage this sustainably with more recyclable items by reducing single-use items and developing more recyclable items such as packaging.

As with all Archibus WEB Central applications, key consoles are provided to analyse and manage data in a clear and user-friendly format using consoles. The Hazardous Waste Accumulation Console provides graphics and data enabling organisations to review past and plan future waste generation and its associated disposal into clean environmentally safe depositories to achieve a more sustainable environment for future generations to come.
