Scottish Ambulance Service looses laptop containing patient records; (23rd November 2009)

- A laptop containing 600 patient records was stolen from their headquarters that was due to be encrypted. The data included patient names, addresses and details of their treatments.

- The NHS is reported to be accountable for 30% of all data breaches occurring since 2007.

As the Information Commissioner's Office recently reported that the number of incidents of loss and theft of data had risen to "unacceptable" levels in the past year, they plan to implement heavier penalties for inappropriate use of data to reflect the high importance of safeguarding this.

With more than 200 hospitals and 200 companies reporting breaches of the Data Protection Act in the past two years, and with more and more cases reported by the media including the 25million child benefit records lost in 2007; greater emphasis is now being placed on safeguarding data.
