A structural engineering firm that had no record of maintaining their electrical equipment over a 50-year period has been fined after an incident where a worker suffered severe burns as a result of an electric shock.
The worker sustained burns at D A Green & Sons' factory in Lincolnshire and needed a week off work after the incident.
An HSE investigation revealed that most of the electrical installation was in a very poor state. In some cases electrical equipment had been installed 50 years earlier and the company had no record of it ever being tested or maintained.
The HSE stated that "D A Green & Sons Ltd employs 50 staff whose health and safety has been at risk over many years. They were lucky that this particular incident wasn't more serious."
The company has been fined £2750 plus £1950 costs after breaching Regulation 4 of the Electricity at Work Regulations by failing to maintain electrical systems to prevent danger.
