The shocking tower block blaze in Camberwell is the latest event that to be investigated after questionable fire management procedures, but previous events have not only left those involved with great losses, but all responsible facing substantial fines. These include:

Owners of two Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) in Peterborough were fined £1,000 each for failing to maintain fire safety equipment in their properties.
A factory owner in East Ham was fined £25,000 with costs of £6,000. Breaches included obstructed escape routes, locked fire exit doors, a poorly maintained fire alarm and a lack of fire-resistant partitions.
Iceland Foods was fined £28,500 after an electrical fire resulted in evacuated members of staff being stranded on the roof without an escape route.
A pub manager was fined £18,000 and costs of £1,750 after a fire at their hotel in Lancashire.

All of these events could and should have been avoided with the implementation of simple but effective Fire Risk Management strategies.

As a basic, strategies should include Fire Risk Assessments, regular inspections of fire safety equipment and effective evacuation drills.
